The-Prophet
Aristeo Jaure, a jaunty cup of Starbucks coffee, complete with cardboard sleeve, sits next to a fallen soldier. A double-chinned boy lolls on a sofa, shoving a donut into his mouth. A black man gulps down a cool bottle of “Miller Genuine Lies” as if it contains redemption. These are a few of the colorful and provocative oil paintings of Tau Jaure, an artist of rare skill and keen observation. In both paintings and drawings, Jaure’s sculptural sense of line and shading turns her subjects’ faces into rutted roads, dry rivers and deep canyons— into states on a roadmap or pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
This Chicago-based artist shares her vision with the world by addressing some of today’s most relevant social issues through art. Tao’s personal goal to provoke a reaction, and force observers to create their own solution to the problems portrayed. You won’t need wine and cheese to appreciate her work.
