Natasa Atanaskovic’s recent works celebrate the artists who changed the world. In this series, she pays homage to a veritable Mount Olympus of Modern Art. Often, portraits of the artist haunt the foreground of their own works. The paintings are masterworks of duality: realistic reproductions and expressionist juxtapositions. To peruse Atanaskovic’s paintings is like walking through a museum.

In one work, Spanish Surrealist Joan Miró looks pensive in front of his “Horse, Pipe and Red Flower.” Miró’s crayon-bright still life, a kaleidoscope of flat organic shapes ranging from horse to hibiscus, represents images plumbed from the psyche. Another shows Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt glowering before one of his canvases, a representation of “Tragedy” recast as a glacial turn-of-the-century sophisticate. A third painting highlights a company of dancers facing an audience that includes admiring theatergoers as well as Henri Matisse’s exuberantly fluid painting, “The Dance.”

To peruse Atanaskovic’s paintings is also like walking through a church. She explains her intensions a statement on the Artists I Love website (http://www.artistsilove.com/natasa.html) “My wish was not to copy either photographs, or the paintings of artists,” she says. “I examined the artificial likenesses through the eye of an Orthodox-iconographer in the atmosphere of their artistic reality. “ Atanaskovic’s skill with pencil and paintbrush. The innovative visions of the world’s great paintings. The somber gaze of artists who sought to materialize truth. Each of these evokes the reverence once afforded to Byzantine saints. Natasa Atanaskovic, who hails from Belgrade, Serbia, gets viewers looking at talent. And she is undoubtedly a talent to watch for.
